I am on Twitter every day and am painfully aware in the difference in quality between a big account and a small account. I am also aware that many big accounts are big not based on merit, but based on who knew them before they started their Twitter account.
If you run a Twitter account, you need to see what others in your industry are writing and tweeting about. You need content to retweet too. Unfortunately if you retweet from the same sources every day, your content will get boring. So, you need some fresh content too. This is why following 10,000 relevant people on Twitter can make your inbox feed an interesting place. Unfortunately, the posts from smaller twitter accounts are rarely interesting and rarely well written. The key is to filter out bad people from your feed until you have only reasonably decent people. In real life, nobody with 10,000 followers will offer the same quality output as someone with a million, but if you pick good accounts with around 10,000 followers, you might be able to get quality content to retweet from time to time that nobody else who is big on Twitter has seen before — original content!
Even the best accounts with 10,000 followers rarely have consistently good content. The travel Twitter accounts tend to have better articles and photos as a general rule, so perhaps they are the exception. But, in the world of business which is my primary interest on Twitter, I have found that only the big guys have mastered the art of being interesting every day every time.
So, what is the difference between a Twitter account with 1000 followers and 1,000,000? The one with 1000 followers will most likely be horrible and have content like: “Love ya” and “Thanx for the follow” or “@abe @123 @zya @tsi I can’t believe this happened,” while the big Twitter accounts will have really interesting articles and meaningfully written Tweets.
What about accounts in the 30,000 to 300,000 range? Mid-size accounts often have good contents. Sometimes they are too repetitive with their content always publishing the same thing over and over again. Other times they will have interesting articles, but poorly written tweets. A good tweet makes your article stand out among the rest, while a poor tweet just summarizes the article or restates the title. You have 140 characters for a tweet, so you can do a lot better than just regurgitating a title!
