When people are browsing around on twitter and click on your twitter account name, they immediately see your last four posts, and then have the option to click to see more. But, what if your last four tweets were meaningless interactions, or off topic posts? A lot of strategy needs to go into a successful Twitter account. It is not always easy to know how to proceed.
It seems to me that a certain amount of balance is necessary. If you do an interaction, make it fun and unique. Don’t just say, “Thanks for the RT”. Say something that will attract people to your account as a whole. “Thanks for the RT, I agree that the Universe is coming to an end — but, there will be other universes!”
Another thought is that interactions with others should be followed by a popular tweet. It is not always possible to predict which of your tweets will be popular unless you are doing a variation on a popular theme. But, you can guess. It is strategic to spread your top notch material out. Instead of blowing it all on a particular day, do one really great tweet per day and mix it in with your “regular” tweets. Of course in life there is no such thing as a regular tweet. But, you can keep an A list and a B list, and simply refuse to tweet anything that falls below that standard.
Another aspect to consider is your retweeting strategy. Should you retweet materials from GENERAL media sources? Should you retweet INDUSTRY SPECIFIC tweets? Should you retweet the best responses to content on your SOCIAL MEDIA accounts such as your Facebook, Twitter, or Linked In accounts? Experts say that you should tweet a mixture of all three categories. But, what is the optimal ratio for your particular account? That is something you will have to experiment with and find out.
My opinion is to pay attention to what you tweet. Tweet humor, and tweet a good mix of general content that you think your fans will like along with industry specific and social media content. Keep a good mix between interactions, retweets and original content as well. Success is all about having good content and a good mix! Good luck!
